Find out what percentage of your life you have lived
The life percentage calculation divides your current age by your estimated life expectancy to produce a number that sits uncomfortably between a statistic and a meditation. Most people who use this tool spend a moment sitting with the result before moving on. That moment is the tool's purpose.
This tool is designed to be thought-provoking without being distressing. The percentage is presented alongside a reframing: not "look how much is gone" but "look at what remains, and what you might do with it." The psychological research on mortality salience — the activation of awareness of one's mortality — is mixed but generally finds that brief, non-threatening mortality reminders increase prosocial behaviour, present-moment engagement, and focus on meaningful goals.
Life expectancy at birth and life expectancy conditional on current age are different numbers. A baby born today in the UK has a life expectancy at birth of approximately 79 (male) or 83 (female). A person currently aged 50 has a higher conditional life expectancy — approximately 82 (male) or 85 (female) — because they have already survived the risks that reduce population averages. This calculator uses a fixed life expectancy that you can adjust, rather than conditional life expectancy tables, which would require demographic detail to calculate properly.
If contemplating your life percentage brings up difficult or distressing feelings, that is a reasonable response to a challenging prompt. The tool includes a note about this. If those feelings persist or become overwhelming, speaking to someone you trust or a mental health professional is the appropriate next step — not continuing to use any online tool.
