Horror movies operate on a set of genre conventions that viewers learn to read — including the patterns that determine who survives and who does not. These patterns were largely codified through the slasher genre of the 1970s–80s and have been extensively parodied, subverted, and deconstructed (most famously by Scream, 1996, which made the meta-commentary on horror conventions central to its plot).
The "final girl" trope — identified and named by film scholar Carol Clover — describes the female survivor of the slasher who tends to be more resourceful, less conventionally transgressive, and more active than other characters. The characters most likely to die first are often shown making actively bad decisions in tense situations. These conventions reflect both storytelling mechanics (tension requires stakes) and the moral frameworks of genre cinema in specific historical periods.
