Biological Age: The Science and the Limitations

Biological age is an attempt to quantify how old a person's body appears to be relative to population norms, based on measurable health and lifestyle indicators rather than birth year. The concept has significant scientific validity — biological age derived from clinical markers predicts health outcomes and mortality more accurately than chronological age alone in multiple longitudinal studies.

How real biological age is measured

Clinically validated biological age assessments use blood biomarkers (telomere length, inflammatory markers, epigenetic methylation patterns), functional measures (grip strength, gait speed, lung function), and metabolic indicators. The most robust method currently is epigenetic clock analysis — measuring patterns of DNA methylation across thousands of sites to produce a biological age estimate with strong predictive validity.

Consumer products claiming to measure biological age via blood samples (some use telomere length, others epigenetic panels) have partial validity but significant measurement variance — the same person tested twice may get different results. They are directionally informative.
